A Balanced Approach to Health
Dr. Sheppard’s approach to her patient’s health is that the body is an
energetic system that is constantly interacting with itself and the environment.
Disease processes occur when this energy dynamic becomes imbalanced.
Naturopathic philosophy emphasizes finding the root cause of imbalance,
versus just treating the symptoms. Dr. Sheppard works to assess the origin of
disease or imbalance in each patient, using both Western and Chinese
doctrines. Naturopathic medicine invokes the healing power of nature and
strives to give the least force necessary to promote health and wellness. Many
treatments are age-old remedies or common plants that can have dramatic
clinical effects if properly administered.
Dr. Sheppard has over 12 years of clinical experience in naturopathic
medicine and acupuncture, with an emphasis on helping patients with complex
disease patterns, such as chronic diseases, metabolic disorders, autoimmune
diseases, allergies, traumatic and/ or pain syndromes, reproductive health
issues, aging and degenerative disorders, heart, lung and kidney diseases, and
many more.
Multiple Modalities
Dr.Sheppard facilitates patients toward balance by using botanical
medicine, nutrition, and physical therapeutics. Where appropriate, she also
employs homeopathy and life coaching for addressing the unique needs of her
patients.
Botanical medicine and cultivation has been a life-long hobby of Dr.
Sheppard. She has been an avid gardener throughout her life, and was one of
the original plant donors to the wondrous Bastyr Herbal Garden in Seattle,
Washington. She currently maintains several gardens in the triad area with over
100 species of medicinal plants from all over the world. Dr. Sheppard works
with each individual for their specific herbal ally needs, in multiple forms such
as a food, tea, pill, tincture or topical preparation.
Dr. Sheppard also specializes in nutritional consultations. Dr. Sheppard has
a solid background in physiology and biochemistry, including prior experience
as an environmental chemist, and as a teaching assistant in physiology at Bastyr
University. Dr. Sheppard’s expertise in the cellular biochemistry of each system
in the body contributes to her understanding of the nutrient needs in diseased
states and is very beneficial when comprehending the components of
supplements and the therapeutic value they offer each of her patients. Dr.
Sheppard instructs her patients about vitamin safety based upon validated
clinical results from the latest clinical research. In addition, Dr. Sheppard’s
training and experience has given her unique expertise in environmental
toxicology, exposure to which is universal in westernized societies.
